Research Focus

We explored the effects of music on multiple dimensions of visitors’ experience to find out more about how music becomes a meaningful part of exhibition design and not simply whether it works. The EUROMUSE research programme investigated the relationship between original museum-specific music, visitor engagement, interpretation, accessibility and participatory museum practice across three contrasting European museum environments.

Participatory Creation Processes

What are the effects of participative processes involving composers, curators and visitors through Community Muse Boards (CMBs) on the creation of music compositions?

The research explored how collaborative approaches influence artistic outcomes and whether similar or context-specific patterns emerge across different museum environments.

Synomusic and Visitor Experience

What are the effects of Synomusic compared to silence on visitors’ experience in different museum contexts?

The study investigated emotional engagement, atmosphere, accessibility, interpretation, attention and audience responses in order to identify both common trends and context-specific effects.

EUROMUSE aimed to understand not only whether music matters in museums, but how and why it shapes the visitor experience.
